In hospice, occupational therapy is largely underused and underrated. An OT can evaluate the ability of your loved one to accomplish activities of daily living, and come up with alternative ways to accomplish these tasks. This allows the patient to maintain independence, which in turn affects confidence, attitude, and most importantly, quality of life - that's why we offer this service to every single patient.
Meridian loves our occupational therapists, and so do our families. We give our thanks to all OTs (hospice or not) across the globe!
There's no party like a tea party! This month's Tea Time featured delightful tea party hats created by the residents at Travanse Living. Each gal was able to pick and choose the flowers and ribbon they wanted to use for their own hat; the most common phrase of the afternoon was, "I haven't worn a hat in years!" followed by hearty laughs. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing our seniors smile, and hope to continue doing so!
Hospice Advocacy gives a voice to an underserved community. We are happy to have one of those voices in helping the quality and origination of how our state officials, work with hospices all over. We got a chance to meet with our state representatives Sam Yingling, Daniel Biss and Kevin Schoenben from the comptroller’s office.
Puppy power! Mollypolly, our therapy dog from Therapy Dogs International, was living it up at Autumn Leaves of Vernon Hills. The effect of a therapy dog on the residents was astounding; Mollypolly was definitely the mid-week boost that everyone needed. As soon as she walked in the room, the whole community lit up. Can't wait to do more visits with her!
The residents (and staff!) of Autumn Leaves of Vernon Hills loved Meridian's Men's Corner. We played cards, bag toss, and had a ton of fun with photo booth props. As usual, delicious snacks were provided by The Bent Fork as well. Stay tuned and keep coming back to this page for our next Men's Corner update!
The ladies of Travanse Living loved our monthly tea party event. We had a bag toss, snacks, a photo booth with props, and even a contest to guess the number of sugar cubes in a jar! Our winner got luxurious slippers, an awesome mug, and a box of peppermint tea. Thanks also to The Bent Fork for providing all of our delicious cookies and cupcakes. If you would like to have a tea party at your community, please contact us to set one up!
Big shout out to Harbor Chase of Long Grove for having a fantastic grand opening event. Brooke, our community educator, had a blast volunteering and helping others in the community. Congratulations to the staff who worked so hard to put this event together; the food, decor, and entertainment were spot on. We love Harbor Chase and can't wait to work together in the future!
Today we honor one of the great human activist of our history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We love this quote most because we believe in lighting burdens and no matter the burden, when we do it from a place of love, it just always seems that much easier. We remind you to believe in love, because without it, oh how hard it would all be to bear.
Another successful day at Travanse Living! The residents absolutely loved spending time with Meridian and playing bingo. Our winners had an especially great time flaunting their winnings (who doesn't love to win money?)! We can't wait to come back for our bingo next month.
Our occupational therapist Vi Truong had a successful exercise class with the memory care residents of Travanse Living! Vi is a great resource that our communities can utilize; at her classes she emphasizes on improving strength, endurance, fall prevention, and disease process education, among many other important topics. Providing exercise is just one of the many aspects of Meridian Health Care that support the high quality care we offer to our communities.
The Meridian team and other colleagues in the field had so much fun renewing our CPR certifications! RN Jake Ellwing from Simple CPR Training was a great educator and offered clear instructions for basic CPR for adults and children, AED application, and the Heimlich maneuver. A huge thank you to Autumn Leaves of Vernon Hills for allowing us to use their facility and to those who attended the course!
November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month. "It's about how YOU live" is the theme for this year! If you're unsure about hospice or if it's the right option for you, now is the perfect time to ask. Here at Meridian, our main goal is to spread education and awareness about how hospice can greatly increase the quality of life for you and your loved ones. Contact us to see how we can help you make an informed decision!
We asked the brothers of Theta Lambda Beta UIC to volunteer for an ice cream social for the residents of Heritage Woods of South Elgin! All the residents had a sweet time while dancing and eating ice cream. Thank you to the brothers of Theta Lambda Beta for offering your time and we hope to work together again in the future!
